Kamik's own site doesn't hedge on where it's from: "Founded in the 1890s on the South Shore of Montreal, Kamik has always been committed to local manufacturing... It all started with our founder's vision: create boots that could withstand harsh Canadian conditions while keeping families protected and comfortable from all elements." The company leans on the line "Made by Canadians, for Canadians," with over 125 years of production still rooted in Quebec.

The boot factory traces back to 1898 in Contrecœur, Quebec, taken over in 1932 by William Cook — the acquisition that started the family's stewardship of the company. The Kamik name itself was adopted in 1976, borrowed from the Inuktitut word for boot. Parent company Genfoot, headquartered in Montreal, is now run by a third generation of the same family, employing roughly 400 people across plants in Quebec, Ontario, and New Hampshire — a case study HEC Montréal's own Family Enterprise chair cites specifically for "preserving family values across generations."
