Stanfield's own website doesn't hedge: a page titled "Canadian Even Before Canada" states, "At Stanfield's Ltd., we take immense pride in our rich heritage as a 5th Generation family owned, Canadian-owned and operated company... At a time when Canadians are becoming more patriotic and choosing Canadian, Stanfield's is a Canadian brand and company, unlike the majority of our competitors, who are foreign-owned and operated."

Their own history page traces it to 1856, when Charles E. Stanfield founded a woolen mill in Tryon, PEI — twelve years before Confederation. His sons developed the "Shrink-Proof Process" that made Stanfield's underwear famous during the Klondike Gold Rush. The company still designs, knits, cuts, and sews the majority of its products at its original Truro, Nova Scotia factory, and retooled that same plant to produce isolation gowns during COVID-19 — just as it had for both world wars.
